Relationship — A purpose or means ?

Any activity we do, has a purpose behind it. Often the purpose is different from the means. Do you know the secret of true relationship ? Let’s explore it…

It was 1993. I was 6 years old. My father was a Govt. officer and he was supplied with an orderly peon. His name was Ramesh. He was a simple hearted, down to earth person, always smiling. He helped my mother in all household activities and also in keeping me and my elder brother engaged. You may be thinking, what is so much special about a servant ?

Yes, there is something special about him, because of which even after 27 years, he is still fresh in my memory. He served in my house for 2 years. There was never a sign of fatigue on his face even after a long day of physical toil. I don’t know how he became a part of my family. Days passed by… and finally the day came, when he had to leave for some other assignment. I remember that scene vividly, he was standing behind the door and was sobbing uncontrollably. I asked him, “Ramesh bhai, why you are crying ?”. He didn’t reply, just hugged me tightly. I asked my mother why Ramesh is crying ? She told, today was his last day in our house, thats why he was crying.

For a small child it was a just an emotion. But today, I can understand that it was so deep and rare. He was a servant. He can do his duty and rest of his time he can spend for his own. But, I saw for a period of 2 years, his entire life revolved around serving my family. Not a single space in his mind and heart was occupied by any other thought. Thus he enjoyed it and loved it. The thought of leaving such company hurt him so much. He didn’t work for salary, he worked just to make my family happy. After a few years, he died due to a snake bite. I was very much shocked due to his sudden departure and his old memories flashed back in my mind.

Did you got the secret of true relationship ? Mostly in our lives, first comes a need and then we search for a relationship to satisfy the need. Not all of us are fortunate enough to be gifted with a matching personality. As soon as there is a little hinderance in fulfilling our needs, we shout back. But when relationship does n’t become a means to satisfy our needs and rather becomes the purpose itself, we can experience the depth in it. It was the heart of loving relationships in the puranic stories and Vedic sagas.

One may ask, in this world of imperfections, where to find such a person to repose our Love unto ? Yes, it’s a difficult question indeed. We want to deliver our most precious wealth- “THE HEART” to someone, but we can hardly find a suitable customer who is willing to pay for it.

Thus I have decided, my heart is reserved only for someone very special. I am fortunate to be able to find that person.

Before we depart, do you know the love story of a five year old boy ? This is what he replied when his Beloved encouraged him to ask something in return for the service he rendered, “O my Lord, I am Your unmotivated servant, and You are my eternal master. There is no need of our being anything other than master and servant. You are naturally my master, and I am naturally Your servant. We have no other relationship.” (SB.7.10.6) . Hearing this the master was in tears. “You have suffered so much atrocities for Me. But I can’t repay…”

Both of them want to give but none of them want to receive and both of them may finally receive just to make the other person happy. When such a relationship is established in our life, our life becomes the abode of divine Love and we become a ray of hope for the suffering humanity carrying the load of unhealthy expectations.
